Contract Description:
Goal of research is to evaluate effects of habitat change and flow regulation on historic and current estuarine food webs that support diverse juvenile salmonid estuarine life histories.  In order to place the existing food web linkages supporting juvenile salmon in the Columbia River estuary, and relate these results to their estuarine life histories and evaluate potential food web responses to historic habitat change and flow regulation, we have conducted comparative studies in the Grays River tributary to the Columbia.  This comparison will combine stable isotope analyses of organic sources, prey species, and salmon tissues with independent analyses of salmon diet and habitat associations that we have already conducted in the main-stem estuary to the same metrics from the Grays River estuary to differentiate the potential differences due to the presence of productive reservoirs on the main-stem and known salmon sources and life histories.  In addition, comparison of the Grays River estuary samples will also provide us insight into the functionality of restoring tidal wetlands and how juvenile salmon respond and perform in a restoring tidal wetland mosaic.  Results from these studies will be completed and reported, and all data and other products provided to BPA within this timeframe.
