The Wallowa River, as it flows through the Baker property, is an aggrading section of river. This, combined with habitat alterations, has resulted in poor streambank and channel stability, diminished instream habitat complexity, and loss of fish habitat and riparian vegetation. The proposed technical assistance activity is to complete an engineered project design and specifications. The engineered design and specifications shall be used by ODFW to secure project implementation funding and to fulfill federal and state permit application requirements. The project will place approximately 35 acres in a conservation easement and include riparian, floodplain, and instream habitat creation. The project addresses the primary limiting factors for federal ESA listed spring/summer Chinook salmon and summer steelhead in this section of the Wallowa River and will also benefit native bull trout and resident fish populations. Partners include the Grande Ronde Model Watershed, landowners John and Tarrah Baker, NMFS, USFWS, and ODOT.
