Contract Description:
This contract covers the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation's work to operate and maintain the Melvin R. Sampson (MRS) Coho Hatchery.

The hatchery program at MRS is designed to help reestablish naturally spawning coho populations to historically occupied tributaries of the Upper Yakima Subbasin that support sustainable harvest and are consistent with tribal and regional ecosystem restoration objectives.

Operated as an integrated population, broodstock for the program will consist of approximately 860 adults collected locally at Roza Dam. Approximately 700,000 smolts/parr will be produced per year for release in upriver tributaries. The long-term target is for returns to average 20,000 locally-adapted adults per year.

The facility was constructed from 2018 to 2021. The hatchery includes a 30,000 sq-ft primary building, 18 early rearing circular tanks, 10 grow out circular tanks, incubation, adult holding raceways, 9 groundwater wells, and effluent treatment. The juvenile rearing tanks are designed to reuse 75% of facility water, substantially reducing water use demand for the facility.
