Contract Description:
This one-year contract covers Year #4 (May 1, 2012 to April 30, 2013) of the Basinwide Supplementation Evaluation project (2009-009-00).  The overarching goal of this project is to initiate a series of actions which support recommendations of the Ad Hoc Supplementation Workgroup (AHSWG) for a basinwide evaluation of the long term effects of hatchery supplementation on productivity of naturally spawning anadromous salmonid populations in the Columbia River basin (AHSWG 2008).  These actions will involve projects to acquire and evaluate more, and more reliable (accurate and precise), information on trends in abundance and productivity of supplemented salmon and steelhead populations, relative reproductive success (RRS) of naturally spawning salmon of natural origin versus hatchery origin within supplemented populations.  Natural origin (NO) fish are defined as ones which are the product of natural spawning within a stream.  Hatchery origin (HO) fish are defined as those which are derived from artificially fertilized eggs which, generally speaking, were then incubated and the fry reared in a hatchery environment for some period prior to their release into the natural environment.

The contract for Year #4 (5/1/2012 to 4/30/2013) includes six specific Project Objectives:

Project Objective #1:  to supplement financing of the NO versus HO relative reproductive success (RRS) study associated with the Nez Perce Tribe (NPT) managed spring Chinook supplementation program - Johnson Creek Artificial Propagation Enhancement Project (JCAPE)

Project Objective #2:  to support NO versus HO relative reproductive success (RRS) studies associated with tribal salmon reintroduction/supplementation program (where the native population had been extirpated).  These studies involve reintroduced populations of spring Chinook in the Hood River, Newsome Creek (South Fork Clearwater River) and Lookingglass Creek (Grande Ronde River), and to investigate possibilities for support of studies in additional reintroduction programs

Project Objective #3:  to assess progress of tribal sockeye salmon reintroduction efforts in the Deschutes/Metolious./Suttle Lake basin and in the Yakima/Cle Elum/Cle Elum Lake basin

Project Objective #4:  to coordinate inter-tribal workshops and training programs, including one workshop on tribal coho reintroduction programs, and two Introduction to Genetics Analyses in Tribal Fisheries Management workshops

Project Objective #5:  to participate in regional forums for review of hatchery effects on natural populations

Project Objective #6:  to use a Dual-Frequency Identification Sonar (DIDSON) to obtain an estimate of the 2012 natural spawning escapement of spring Chinook population upstream of the Castile Falls complex in the upper basin of the Klickitat River

Project Objective #7:  to prepare manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed scientific journals
