Contract Description:
We will evaluate 1) fish community composition and 2) relationships between native and non-native fishes and habitat characteristics throughout the entire length of the 273-km mainstem of the Willamette River using the same protocol from initial sampling in 2011-2013 and in 2021. We will compare our fish community data collected in the initial sampling in 2011-2013 to the current sampling of 2021-2023 to understand potential changes ten years later.  This funding will support sampling in summer 2022. Current funds will support field data collection for fish sampling and habitat characteristics; and data analysis of fish data.

D225076157Collect/Generate/Validate Field and Lab DataField surveys and Data managementWe will follow fish and physical habitat surveys of the Willamette River mainstem following protocol from initial decadal sampling from 2011-2013 (Williams et al. 2014). We will stratify field sampling of the mainstem Willamette River into three sections: upper, middle, and lower. Section designation is based on an analysis of river geomorphology. Each 1-km slice of the mainstem river or floodplain slough (within a river slice) represents a single sampling location site. Sites will be chosen randomly within each of the three river sections. We propose to sample 6 repeated 1-km slices (eg sites) in each section of the mainstem Willamette River, for a total of 18 sites (eg 6 sample sites x 3 river sections). We will sample native and non-native fish in the entire mainstem Willamette River and the McKenzie River up to Trailbridge Dam. Sampling will be conducted from June to November 2022. Within each sample location, fish will be captured with a boat and backpack electrofisher by two netters. We will sample shallow microhabitats along the shore in each sampling site to represent the variety of nearshore habitats at each site. Physical habitat characteristic data are collected wherever electrofishing occurs either by boat or backpack. At the end of each sampling effort, fish will be identified to species and measured (length), and habitat characteristics of the sampling sites recorded. Oregon State University staff (the subcontractors) will perform field surveys and data management.$17,50035.00%06/01/202205/31/2023

Previous monitoring of the mainstem Willamette River from 2011 to 2013 provided a baseline for our current monitoring of native and non-native fish communities and evaluation of status and trends. Physical habitat data will be collected and but not analyzed under this contract. Our proposed work is designed to make estimates of 1) abundance of native and nonnative fishes 2) richness of fish community 3) proportion of native species 4) proportion of salmonids in the mainstem Willamette River.
