Contract Description:
The ultimate goal of the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) Sockeye Salmon Captive Broodstock Program is to reestablish sockeye salmon runs to Sawtooth Valley waters and to provide for utilization of sockeye salmon and kokanee resources.  In the near term, our goal is to maintain genetic resources unique to Snake River sockeye salmon and prevent species extinction while long-term solutions in smolt-to-adult survival are sought. The IDFG and the Stanley Basin Sockeye Technical Oversight Committee (SBSTOC) have agreed to adhere to a program of prudent broodstock management to minimize inbreeding and the potential influence of domestication.  In cooperation with the University of Idaho (U of I) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries, annual spawning designs are developed to minimize the risk of inbreeding and to maximize the distribution of genetic information across families.  The SBSTOC will develop annual release plans for eyed-eggs, juveniles, and adult fish from the program.

Sockeye Salmon Captive Broodstock Program
Objectives and Tasks
1. Develop captive broodstocks from Redfish Lake sockeye salmon, culture broodstocks and produce progeny for reintroduction.

2. Determine the contribution hatchery-produced sockeye salmon make toward avoiding population extinction and increasing population abundance.

3. Describe O. nerka population characteristics for Sawtooth Valley lakes in relation to carrying capacity and broodstock program reintroduction efforts.

4. Utilize genetic analysis to discern the origin of wild and broodstock sockeye salmon to provide maximum effectiveness in their utilization within the broodstock program.

5. Transfer technology through participation in the technical oversight committee process, provide written activity reports, and participate in essential program management and planning activities.

Idaho Department of Fish and Game' s participation in the Snake River Sockeye Salmon Captive Broodstock Program includes two areas of effort: 1) sockeye salmon captive broodstock culture, and 2) sockeye salmon research and evaluations.
