Title:
U: 162 - Analyze Radio Telemetry and PIT Tag Detection Data for Adult Spring Chinook Salmon and Summer Steelhead
Description:
After pinpointing the location of tagged fish using triangulation, fish position will be recorded using an iPad with GPS capability. The iPad contains topographic maps of the river corridors so crews can determining fish position and add waypoints. For each tagged Chinook Salmon, observers date, time, tag ID, transmitter pulse (sec), habitat type, location description, UTM coordinates, river temperature and fish behavior (moving, holding) will be recorded as well as any other notable observations. Temperature, pressure and activity sensor logged information can be downloaded from recovered Chinook Salmon tags. Information from each tagged fish will be synthesized and summarized to describe movement patterns in the Warm Springs rivers, where adult holding is occurring, and prespawn mortality. Adult holding areas will be described throughout the holding period in terms of habitat type, depth, water temperature, length of stay, and whether spawning occurred. Recovered carcasses will be analyzed by USFWS fish pathologist. Analyses of radio telemetry data for spring Chinook Salmon will focus on where pre-spawning mortality is occurring or suspected and why, as well as evaluate transportation as a viable option to reduce prespawn mortality. Analysis of summer Steelhead will focus on if fish are spawning successfully and how quickly they spawn after passing WSNFH.

Description: The Study Plan (including temporal and spatial design) and Methods for this work element are stored at monitoringresources.org and need to be finalized there, preferably prior to data collection. Preparations for contract renewals must include reviewing any previously finalized Study Plan/Methods to ensure that they are consistent with how work will be done in any subsequent contract.
