Title:
H: 157 - Assessment of the Restored Westslope Cutthroat Trout Population in West Branch LeClerc Tributary 1
Description:
Native Westslope Cutthroat Trout (WCT) were protected and restored, following successful mechanical eradication of non-native Brook Trout, in West Branch LeClerc Tributary 1 (2003-2014). As part of a long-term periodic monitoring effort, population assessments will be conducted for the WCT sections of the project area (1.5 Km). Single pass (range detection) and multiple-pass depletion (abundance estimates) electrofishing will be conducted for each reach of fish-bearing waters within the project area. Data collected from this effort will inform this and planned WCT restoration projects within the Pend Oreille Basin.

7 Milestones
Sort Type Title Start End Status Modified By Modified Date
A EC Environmental compliance requirements complete 5/1/2024 5/1/2024 Concluded Carlos Matthew 1/31/2024 10:40:24 AM
Description: On-the-ground work associated with this work element cannot proceed until this milestone is complete. Milestone is complete when final documentation is received from BPA environmental compliance staff.
B PUBPROTOCOL Review, revise, and finalize study plan sample design protocol and methods in MonitoringResouces.org 5/1/2024 4/30/2025 Active Carlos Matthew 8/25/2023 3:00:31 PM
Description: The Study Plan's Sample Design, Protocol and Methods for this work element are stored at MonitoringResources.org and need to be completed (i.e., "Finalized" through MonitoringResources.org), preferably prior to data collection. Preparations for contract renewals must include reviewing any previously finalized Sample Designs, Protocols & Methods to ensure that they are consistent with how work will be done in any subsequent contract.
C Suggested Implement Study Plan 5/1/2024 4/30/2025 Active Carlos Matthew 1/10/2024 1:30:37 PM
Description: Implement the study plan's protocols and sample design consistent with the WE description and methods in the SOW. The start date of this milestone is used to set the completion date for the EC milestone.
D BackUp Secure data back-up 5/1/2024 4/30/2025 Active Carlos Matthew 8/25/2023 3:00:31 PM
Description: Minimum requirements: Hard copies of field sheets and original dataloggers secured against fire and flood. At least daily data back-up of electronic data on a separate hard drive. Secure cloud-based or off-site location data back-up to preclude catastrophic data loss at least weekly. More frequent cloud/off-site back-up is greatly encouraged. [Timing guidance: from beginning to end of contract]
E Upload Yearly upload of error-checked datasets 5/1/2024 4/30/2025 Active Carlos Matthew 8/25/2023 3:00:31 PM
Description: Upload datasets with associated metadata to a publicly accessible site each year as soon as they have been QA/QC checked. This generally happens within 6 months for direct field-to-database input, but may be longer if laboratory analysis is required (e.g., scale reading or genetic analyses). If data is not QA/QCed within 1 year, data must be made accessible with acknowledgement of QA/QC limitations. Periods for dataset collection should be no longer than a year, and coincide with the logical biology of the data collection, which may not be on a calendar year. Example of a dataset: redd counts for one species for one season for a particular brood year. Dataset upload requirements apply to both original and derived data, which should be at a level of quality suitable for release to resource co-managers to make decisions – not the rigor required as if you were going to use the data for a peer-reviewed publication.
F Conduct Population Assessment of West Branch LeClerc Tributary 1 Westslope Cutthroat Trout 7/3/2024 9/30/2024 Concluded Carlos Matthew 1/30/2024 8:12:13 AM
Description: A minimum of one 100 m section will be selected for Westslope Cutthroat Trout (WCT) population estimates from each of the project reaches identified in West Branch LeClerc Tributary 1; this will consist of up to four 100 m sections selected across the project area. The habitat will be consistent and representative of the overall reach with features important for all life stages of WCT present (e.g., pools, runs, riffles, suitable cover, spawning gravels, etc.). Prior to conducting full the assessment, the edge of range (i.e., upper distribution) within the project area will be determine using single-pass electrofishing. For the full assessment, methods will consist of multiple-pass depletion electrofishing (repeat passes until <50% of previous pass numbers are captured; 2-3 total passes), with secure block nets on the upstream and downstream extent of the 100 m section of each reach (Murphy and Willis 1996, Heimbuch et al. 1997). Crews will consist of one person operating the Smith-Root LR-24 backpack electrofishing unit (or equivalent) and two individuals operating dip nets to collect stunned fish. Collected WCT will be weighed to the nearest 0.1 gram, measured (total length) to the nearest mm, marked by removing the adipose fin and returned to the stream in close proximity to the capture point. If the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife determines it is necessary, fin clips (caudal fin) from a specific number of individuals will be preserved for genetic analysis and provided to WDFW for processing at a later date outside of this contract and work element. Effort, location and descriptive fish data will be recorded on Rite-in-the-Rain paper and entered into Microsoft Excel workbook for analysis under the associated WE 162.
