Title:
D: 157 - Characterize riverbed substrates
Description:
Sediment facies will be described and mapped to characterize riverbed substrates. Knowledge of substrates is needed for hydrodynamic modeling as well as habitat modeling. Physically, substrates influence channel roughness, which influences water velocities, shear stress, and turbulence. Biologically, substrates influence the quality of habitat for spawning, cover for young fish, and forage production.

Riverbed substrates will be ascertained through a variety of methods, and sediment facies maps will be created from an aggregation and interpretation of all sources of substrate point data. Some point data exists for some areas (identified in a previous work element). An electronic sediment classification system (Biosonics VBT) incorporated into the bathymetric surveys will provide a means of characterizing riverbed substrates over large areas during the bathymetric surveys. The data will be ground-truthed using visual assessments (underwater video or visual assessment in shallow or riparian areas) or grab samplers.
WE Agreement Type:
Contracted
Deliverable Specification:
ArcGIS coverages (electronic files) on desktop PC's of interpreted sediment facies. Raw data used to generate the maps will also be stored in databases. All data will be proofed and error checked, and backed up on servers or other media. Metadata describing the datasets will be produced.

Sort Type Title Start End Status Modified By Modified Date
A EC Environmental compliance requirements complete 11/15/2007 11/30/2007 Concluded Michael Parsley (Inactive) 10/4/2007 9:34:26 AM
Description: On-the-ground work associated with this work element cannot proceed until this milestone is complete. Milestone is complete when final documentation is received from BPA environmental compliance staff (completion can be based on pre-existing environmental documentation from BPA).
B Collect point data describing substrates 11/15/2007 4/30/2008 Concluded Michael Parsley (Inactive) 10/4/2007 3:01:33 PM
Description: Use a variety of methods to characterize riverbed substrates at point locations. An automated sediment classification system will be used on the bathymetric survey vessel to capture data during surveys. Additional point data will be taken using visual techniques or grab samplers.
C Create sediment facies datasets 11/15/2007 11/14/2008 Concluded Michael Parsley (Inactive) 10/4/2007 3:02:06 PM
Description: Aggregate substrate classification point data and interpret data to create sediment facies maps. Ground-truth data as needed. Produce metadata.
D DELIV Sediment GIS layer 11/14/2008 Concluded Michael Parsley (Inactive) 10/4/2007 9:34:27 AM
