Title:
N: 157 - Monitor phosphorus levels at Mud Springs
Description:
Collect phosphorus data in cooperation with the Nez Perce Tribe Water Resources Department, using standardized methods, to monitor effectiveness of project's pond renovation efforts at Mud Springs Reservoir.
WE Agreement Type:
Contracted
Deliverable Specification:
Collect phosphorus data in cooperation with the Nez Perce Tribe Water Resources Department, using standardized methods, USGS Techniques of Water Resources Investigations, Book 9 Handbook, National Field Manual for the Collection of Water Quality Data, to monitor effectiveness of project's pond renovation efforts at Mud Springs Reservoir.

Measurements of Total Phosphorus (TP) are recorded in micrograms per liter. Although phosphorus is not considered toxic in the range of concentrations typically found in field measurements, it is a principal nutrient for algae, and therefore contributes to the eutrophication process which impairs the water quality at Mud Springs.

Cooperative efforts by various agencies, several within the Nez Perce Tribe, including this project within the Department of Fisheries Resources Management, are currently attempting to bring the water quality at Mud Springs into compliance with the EPA Clean Lakes Program standards. This inter and intra-agency team has completed several projects designed to reduce sediment and nutrient load, and thus improve water quality. This project has completed the excavation and off-site removal of nutrient-laden pond sediments, the installation of grazing exclosure fences around the Mud Springs riparian zone, as well as assisted in the design and implementation of several off-site cattle watering developments.
