Title:
F: 157 - Bull trout redd count surveys
Description:
Monitor spawning of ESA listed bull trout in the Touchet River system. Spawning ground surveys document spawning abundance, timing, and distribution of natural adults.

Approach: Conduct spawning ground surveys using visual multiple-pass sampling to assess spawning escapement for bull trout in the Touchet River and its tirbutaries. Redds and live fish or carcasses will be sampled and enumerated as an index of spawner abundance and spatial structure. WDFW will continue to conduct bull trout redd counts in established survey areas of the Touchet River Basin to monitor population status and distribution. WDFW will organize and share survey information with others in the Walla Walla Basin, and provide results to CTUIR and USFWS and USFS, as well as submit summaries to WDFS and USFS databases. Data summaries and analyses will include estimated total redds, redd distribution, spawn timing. We will provide population or redd estimates based on redd surveys and comment on management implications. We will report results and comment on management implications in Annual Progress Report to BPA.

Description: On-the-ground work associated with this work element cannot proceed until this milestone is complete. Milestone is complete when final documentation is received from BPA environmental compliance staff (completion can be based on pre-existing environmental documentation from BPA).
B Conduct bull trout redd surveys 8/19/2009 10/31/2009 Concluded Glen Mendel (Inactive) 12/30/2008 1:38:13 PM
Description: Conduct multiple spawning surveys approximately every two weeks in standardized survey reaches in the upper Wolf Fork, North Fork and South Fork of the Touchet River (and Burnt Fork tributary) during the spawning season. Survey Lewis Creek for bull trout spawning once or twice during the season.
