Contract Description:
Construct breakwaters, islands, emergent benches, and river bank armoring in Area 3,  7, and 11 of the Clark Fork River Delta to mitigate for the loss of terrestrial habitats due to the operation of Albeni Falls Dam. Approximately 22 acres of islands and emergent benches will be constructed to replace eroded habitat. To protect the existing and newly created landforms, 2 breakwaters will be constructed along with 1.8 miles of bank stabilization.

The breakwaters and bank armoring will consist of large rock with willow cuttings interspersed in the riprap. The willows will further fortify the bank, while providing wildlife and fish habitat well into the future. Sedges, rushes, and other vegetation will be planted at the appropriate elevations to provide structure and wildlife habitat on the newly created emergent benches and islands. These vegetation components also produce a wide array of insects that fall into the water and provide a food source for fish. Excavation of materials to build islands and emergent benches will create approximately 20 acres of deep water refugia for fish in the summer and provide off channel habitat for migrating waterfowl in the spring and fall. An inlet and outlet channel will be constructed to provide aquatic access to the area during drawdown periods.  The constructed breakwaters, islands, emergent benches, fortified banks, and excavated pools are expected to provide wildlife and fish habitat indefinitely.
