A Proposal is an application to continue existing work or start new work. While historically the Program solicited for all types of projects at once, starting in fiscal year 2009, the Northwest Power and Conservation Council and BPA are reviewing and soliciting for projects that are similar in nature and intent. These "categorical" reviews started with Wildlife projects and continue with Research, Monitoring, & Evaluation (RME) and Artificial Production (Hatchery) projects.
![]() | RMECAT-1988-053-08 | Proposal Version 1 | Existing Project | Pending BPA Response | 1988-053-08 | Hood River Trapping Operations and Maintenance | This proposal seeks funding for the operation and maintenance of weirs and fish traps on the Hood River and tributaries, hatchery winter steelhead rearing at Oak Springs Fish Hatchery, and spring Chinook rearing at Round Butte Fish Hatchery. These individual projects are all components of the Hood River Production Program (HRPP), which is a multifaceted approach to fisheries restoration in the Hood River Subbasin. Prior to the summer of 2010, all migratory fish returning to the Hood River were sampled at Poweredale Fish Facility. Following the removal of Powerdale Dam and the associated fish trapping structure in 2010, alternative trapping sites are needed to maintain this critical function of the HRPP. To accommodate the capture of winter steelhead, temporary weirs and traps will be operated on the Mainstem Hood River at approximate rivermile 13.0, and on Neal Creek at approximate rivermile 0.25. The Moving Falls Fish Ladder on the West Fork of the Hood River, at approximate rivermile 3.5, will be modified to accommodate a fish trapping structure. Primary functions of the trapping operations include monitoring escapement, collecting life history information, and serve as a collection point for salmon and steelhead hatchery broodstock used for the HRPP. Oak Springs and Round Butte Fish Hatcheries incubate eggs, and rear hatchery winter steelhead, and spring Chinook for release as smolts into the Hood River as part of the HRPP. | Rod French (Inactive) | 06/14/2010 | 07/07/2011 | Rod French (Inactive) | Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife | Artificial Production | None | RME / AP Category Review | RM&E Cat.
