Contract Title:
1998-014-00 EXP OCEAN SURVIVAL OF SALMONIDS (NOAA)
Contract Start Date:
1/1/2018
Contract End Date:
12/31/2018
Title:
E: 162 - Assess the role of the estuary and plume on salmon growth & survival
Description:
Data will be collected to determine the following:

Through analytical assessment of biological features of juvenile salmon in and out of the Columbia River plume, assess the role of unique features of the Columbia River plume that affect salmon growth and survival.

NOAA will:
1) Continue to identify and refine the suite of estuary, plume and ocean indicators that best predict adult returns and survival and support the use of early warning indicators for listed interior Columbia Basin ESUs and DPS.

2) Examine the extent of coupling among estuarine, plume and early ocean habitats and marine survival of interior Columbia juvenile salmon and steelhead.

Tasks will include:

- Species of juvenile salmon will be confirmed from cruise sampling in 2018 (assuming the cruise is completed by the end of June), weighed and measured, and dissected (if warranted). All data will be entered and QA/QC.

- Identify genetic composition of juvenile Chinook salmon from cruises conducted in 2018; collect samples for analysis from salmon sampled in 2018.

- Identify temporal and spatial relationships among Insulin-like Growth Factor (IGF-1) levels as a metric of growth in juvenile salmon as they relate to early ocean survival.

- Examine food habits of salmon that may relate to connectivity to Columbia River estuary habitat.

- Integrate abundance, distribution and growth characteristics of juvenile salmon in the plume environment in relation to ocean condition in coastal marine waters of Oregon and Washington through correlational, spatial, multivariate, and generalized linear models.

- Continue to develop and refine indicators of juvenile salmon survival
WE Agreement Type:
Contracted
Deliverable Specification:
- Process fish from 2018 and 2017, including lengths, weights, and collection of genetic tissue samples, enter all data and QA/QC.

- Analyze genetic stock-specific distributions of juvenile Chinook salmon.

- Process oceanographic samples from 2018 and 2017 and upload into database.

- Refinement of estuary, plume, and ocean indicators affecting early marine survival of salmonids.

- FY18 cruise related planning, staging and conducting cruises for FY19.

- Database will be updated. Data regarding each individual juvenile salmon sampled in 2018 and some information from sampling in 2017 will be entered into an MS Access database of all juvenile salmon sampled from this project (1998 to the present). Data includes: species, size, location of capture, associated oceanographic conditions of sample site, and growth features.

- Datasets will be incorporated to the updated Access database including current sample analysis.
