Title:
C: 157 - Compile data for the 1947-2012 retrospective
Description:
This work element will help to produce final deliverable 1A that will provide a historical retrospective across eras that will rely on adult counts made without distinction of adult origin, but with redd counts made throughout the Snake River basin from 1947 to 2012. We will fit stock-recruitment models with covariates separately for four eras distinguished based on temporal and spatial changes in adult counts and management effort. The four eras will be: the middle Snake River (1947–1972), the Clearwater River (1952–1972), and the lower Snake River and tributaries (1958–1974), and the lower Snake River and tributaries (after 1974). These models will accomplish the following scientific objectives: (1) describe the numerical trends in the adult counts within each era, (2) describe the numerical and spatial trends in redd counts within each era; (3) evaluate changes in the ability to use redd counts as accurate and precise predictors of adult within each era, and (4) increase the understanding of how the numerical trends in the adult counts during each era were influenced by anthropogenic, biological, and environmental change.
WE Agreement Type:
Contracted
Deliverable Specification:
Data required to produce deliverable 1A will be obtained and compiled including: adult counts made at Brownlee, Oxbow, and Hells Canyon dams and redd counts made in the Middle Snake River (1947–1972); adult counts made at Lewiston Dam along the Clearwater River (1952–1972); redd counts made in the lower Snake River and tributaries (1958–1985), (1986–1992); adult counts made at Ice Harbor Dam; during 1958–1985; adult counts made at at Lower Granite Dam (1986–2012) ; and redd count data collected throughout the Snake River basin during 1986–2012. We will document redd survey effort during each era. We will also select a set of covariates in coordination with AMIP modeling activities. The data will be obtained from the historical literature and internet.

Description: On-the-ground work associated with this work element cannot proceed until this milestone is complete. Milestone is complete when final documentation is received from BPA environmental compliance staff (completion can be based on pre-existing environmental documentation from BPA).
B PUBPROTOCOL Review, revise, and Publish protocol, study design, and methods in monitoringmethods.org 6/1/2012 6/1/2012 Concluded William Connor (Inactive) 3/6/2012 3:59:20 PM
Description: The Protocol (including temporal and spatial design) and Methods for this work element are stored at monitoringmethods.org and need to be finalized (i.e., "Published" through monitoringmethods.org), preferably prior to data collection. Preparations for contract renewals must include reviewing any previously published Protocols/Methods to ensure that they are consistent with how work will be done in any subsequent contract.

Description: We will review the historical literature to obtain: adult counts (n = 14 years) made at Brownlee, Oxbow, and Hells Canyon dams and redd counts (n = 15 years) made in the Middle Snake River during 1947–1972; adult counts (n = 19 years) made at Lewiston Dam (Figure 1) along the Clearwater River during 1952–1972; and redd counts (n = 15 years) made in the lower Snake River and tributaries (1958–1985), (1986–1992), and (1993–2012). Adult counts (n = 21 years) are available at Ice Harbor Dam for fish that entered the lower Snake River during lower Snake River during 1958–1985. Adult count data (n = 26 years) at Lower Granite Dam are available for fish entering the major contemporary spawning areas during 1986–2011 and will continue to be available through the foreseeable future. We are part of the team that collected redd count data throughout the Snake River basin and will add the new data collected each year to the existing 1986–2011 data set. We will document redd survey effort during each era. We will select a set of covariates in coordination with AMIP modeling activities. The data will be obtained from the historical literature and internet. The covariates will be indices of anthropogenic, biological, and environmental change. Here we provide the following short list of indices as examples: the cumulative percent of historical habitat that was impounded, harvest rate, the number of hatchery-origin smolts released for supplementation, Columbia flows, Snake River flows, Columbia River dam spill levels, Snake River dam spill levels, Columbia River temperatures, Snake River temperatures, and the Multivariate El Niño Southern Oscillation Index. Methods used for calculating the covariates will be coordinated with expanded life cycle and passage modeling activities. Covariates that might have influenced juvenile survival in freshwater will be calculated using data collected in year t + 1 to cover subyearling migrants and year t + 2 to cover yearling migrants. The MEI values from years t + 1, t + 2, and t + 3 will be used to cover ocean entry and rearing. Predictor variables that might have influenced adult survival in freshwater will be calculated using data collected in year t + 4.
