Title:
E: 157 - Estimate minijack rates of Yakima hatchery spring Chinook salmon(Completion)
Description:
Objective 3a) Long-term minijack monitoring-Yakima Spring Chinook salmon.

Collect data to accurately assess minijack rates for Yakima hatchery spring Chinook salmon. Both NOAA personnel under CR 235280 and University of Washington personnel under this contract assist with these collections. In cooperation with Joy Evered and staff (USFWS pathologist) we sacrifice 60 fish/raceway for length, weight, visual assessment of gonadal development, and plasma 11-ketotestosterone levels (a reproductive steroid that indicates initiation of the maturation process). Furthermore, approximately 90,000 spring Chinook smolts being reared at the Cle Elum Supplementation facility are part of a long term "hatchery domestication" experiment. These fish are the progeny of a uniquely tagged line of hatchery fish that since BY 2001 are repeatedly being crossed as a "domesticated" line to document potential phenotypic and genotypic changes resulting from domestication selection. We sampled 240 fish from the domesticated line to monitor minijack rates in these fish as well. Samples were collected in March of 2013 under the previous contract year. This long term monitoring effort has been conducted for 11 brood years 2001-2011. BY 2011 was the final year class we will monitor for this phenotypic trait. During the current contract period, the plasma samples collected in spring 2013 will be analyzed for plasma 11-KT levels under this UW contract.
