Title:
Q: 157 - Steelhead: Determine Upper Distribution of Redds
Description:
Currently the upper limits of fish distribution in Reservation streams has been based on observation from project implementation (e.g., bull trout snorkel surveys, fish habitat surveys) and observation by past biologists or other CTWSRO Branch of Natural Resources personnel while conducting non-quantitative field activities (e.g., habitat restoration projects, riparian fencing). However, no tangible documentation of the end of anadromy for either species exists. Therefore, proper verification of each species uppermost distribution will be a priority. This information is necessary for refinement of study designs so the entire steelhead/O. mykiss distribution is included during sampling and inferences from the data can be made to entire populations.

Many environmental variables (e.g., wind, turbidity) may inhibit the staffs ability to adequately identify redds. In cases where conditions decrease visibility, crew leads will make the decision whether to continue with sampling. All staff will be trained properly to conduct this type of work with discussions about variables which may increase potential observer error included.

Data gathered though this work element will be supplied to the CTWSRO Habitat section to evaluate the performance of riparian fencing. This data may be used to associate riparian preservation/improvements with increased redd densities inside riparian fences.

Data collected during this contract period (ending 2/28/2015) will be analyzed, summarized and reported in an annual report to BPA during the next contract (3/1/2015 - 2/28/2016).

Contracted
Deliverable Specification:
Determine upper distribution of steelhead/O. mykiss redds in SC, the WSR, Beaver Creek, Badger Creek, Mill Creek, and Boulder Creek, and ensure those points are entered into the CTWSRO GIS database.

For establishing the end of spawning distribution, surveys will be conducted upstream of the uppermost redd survey index reach (where redds have been identified in recent years) in SC and the WSR watersheds (which includes the WSR, Beaver Creek, Badger Creek, Mill Creek, and Boulder Creek). This will be completed by including additional ground surveys along stream banks during redd counts for summer steelhead (mid-March and June). Less is known about spawning distribution in tributaries, so surveys are likely to require more effort, especially since access is more limited. As surveyors reach stream headwaters and are near upper limits of spawning distribution, foot survey efforts will continue for about 1 km above the last redd observed (Gallagher et al. 2007).
