Title:
E: 190 - West Branch LeClerc Creek Tributary 1 Brook Trout Removals
Description:
From 2003 to 2013, 2,232 brook trout were removed from West Branch LeClerc Creek Tributary 1 (Trib 1) using electrofishing gear. This work element was originally implemented through the Kalispel Resident Fish Project (1995-001-00). Initially, brook trout outnumbered WCT by a ratio of 3 to 1. In 2011, first pass electrofishing numbers for WCT and brook trout were 449 and 53, respectively. The second pass in 2011 yielded 686 WCT and 4 brook trout. In 2012, we conducted a series of two treatments with the intention of conducting two passes per treatment. In the first pass of the first treatment we collected 253 WCT and 42 BKT. Considering the low number of brook trout captured in the lower section (three), we decided to limit the second pass of the first treatment to the upper section to limit injury to WCT. The second pass yielded 33 WCT and 48 BKT. We only completed one pass on the second treatment as well, to limit injury to WCT; this pass yielded 131 WCT and 3 BKT. Given the lower densities of BKT and potential harm to WCT in multiple treatments, in 2013 we modified the protocol to complete the removals in one treatment using multiple pass depletion techniques (Murphy and Willis 1996, Heimbuch et al. 1997). This protocol will continue in 2014 and given the level of success in removing brook trout, we feel that complete eradication could be achievable. Any BKT encountered will be removed from the stream and WCT will be returned no more than 100m from capture location.
WE Agreement Type:
Contracted
Deliverable Specification:
One brook trout treatment will be completed in the fish bearing stream channel section of Trib 1 (approximately 2 Km). A treatment is comprised of a minimum of two complete passes back to back using electrofishing gear, in continuous block netted 100 m sections. BKT will be removed from the stream and WCT will be returned no more than 100m from capture location.

A EC Environmental compliance requirements complete 5/1/2014 5/2/2014 Concluded Nick Bean 2/4/2014 12:13:21 PM
Description: On-the-ground work associated with this work element cannot proceed until this milestone is complete. Milestone is complete when final documentation is received from BPA environmental compliance staff (completion can be based on pre-existing environmental documentation from BPA).
B Complete electrofishing treatment in Trib 1 9/1/2014 10/31/2014 Concluded Nick Bean 2/5/2014 4:55:32 PM
Description: A three person crew operating a Smith Root backpack electrofishing unit will complete a minimum of 2 successive passes in Trib 1 using multiple pass depletion techniques (Murphy and Willis 1996, Heimbuch et al. 1997) in continuous 100m block-netted sections. Electrofishing will start at the culvert barrier located near the mouth of the stream and end at a point where no fish are present. Brook trout will be removed and WCT will be returned to the creek downstream of the capture location, no more than 100m from the collection location. The first 100 fish of each species are weighed to the nearest 0.1 gram, measured (total length) to the nearest mm and checked for previous capture identifiers (PIT Tags, fin clips). The treatment will be completed prior to brook trout spawning (generally mid September).
