Title:
E: 157 - Dissolved oxygen monitoring
Description:
Monitoring of hypolimnetic oxygen levels is critical to oxygenating the hypolimnion. Oxygen levels will be monitored continuously by a subcontractor (Gantzer Water Resources Engineering, LLC) with probes in fixed locations in North Twin Lake. Along with Washington State University, we will perform a monthly on-site monitoring sampling event as a quality control for the continuous monitoring probes. The data will be monitored remotely and used to control the amount of oxygen injected.

Readings from oxygen sensors probes are taken every hour and recorded on a data logger. Nine oxygen sensors are located throughout the hypolimnion in North Twin Lake at the bottom (sediment water interface), and 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 meters above the lake bottom. Once a month, an oxygen profile of the lake’s water column is taken using a water quality sonde with an optical dissolved oxygen sensor at one meter intervals for data quality assurance and control. Oxygen sensor probe continuously recorded data is also reviewed for anomalies. Oxygen levels in South Twin will also be monitored to observe oxygen depletion rates for a comparison between the two systems.

Sort Type Title Start End Status Modified By Modified Date
A EC Environmental compliance requirements complete 4/1/2017 4/7/2017 Concluded Suzanne Frye (Inactive) 6/29/2018 3:11:24 PM
Description: On-the-ground work associated with this work element cannot proceed until this milestone is complete. Milestone is complete when final documentation is received from BPA environmental compliance staff.
B PUBPROTOCOL Review, revise, and Publish protocol, study design, and methods in monitoringmethods.org 4/1/2017 5/20/2017 Concluded Suzanne Frye (Inactive) 6/29/2018 3:11:24 PM
Description: The Protocol (including temporal and spatial design) and Methods for this work element are stored at monitoringmethods.org and need to be finalized (i.e., "Published" through monitoringmethods.org), preferably prior to data collection. Preparations for contract renewals must include reviewing any previously published Protocols/Methods to ensure that they are consistent with how work will be done in any subsequent contract.
C BackUp Secure data back-up 4/1/2017 3/31/2018 Concluded Suzanne Frye (Inactive) 6/29/2018 3:11:24 PM
Description: Minimum requirements: Hard copies of field sheets and original dataloggers secured against fire and flood. At least daily data back-up of electronic data on a separate hard drive. Secure cloud-based or off-site location data back-up to preclude catastrophic data loss at least weekly. More frequent cloud/off-site back-up is greatly encouraged. [Timing guidance: from beginning to end of contract]
D Upload Yearly upload of error-checked datasets 4/1/2017 3/31/2018 Concluded Suzanne Frye (Inactive) 6/29/2018 3:11:24 PM
Description: Upload datasets with associated metadata to a publicly accessible site each year as soon as they have been QA/QC checked. This generally happens within 6 months for direct field-to-database input, but may be longer if laboratory analysis is required (e.g., scale reading or genetic analyses). If data is not QA/QCed within 1 year, data must be made accessible with acknowledgement of QA/QC limitations. Periods for dataset collection should be no longer than a year, and coincide with the logical biology of the data collection, which may not be on a calendar year. Example of a dataset: redd counts for one species for one season for a particular brood year. Dataset upload requirements apply to both original and derived data, which should be at a level of quality suitable for release to resource co-managers to make decisions – not the rigor required as if you were going to use the data for a peer-reviewed publication.
E Negotiate contract with subcontractor 4/1/2017 10/31/2017 Concluded Suzanne Frye (Inactive) 6/29/2018 3:11:24 PM
Description: Contract with subcontractor will be negotiated to finalize cost, SOW and delivery dates
F Install and test remote summer monitoring stations 4/1/2017 5/31/2017 Concluded Suzanne Frye (Inactive) 6/29/2018 3:11:24 PM
Description: A remote monitoring station will be installed at the deepest locations and tested in North Twin Lake and South Twin Lake. The remote stations monitor dissolved oxygen and temperature values at several depth above the bottom of the lake including 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 meters above the bottom. Data will be uploaded on a daily basis or as signal strength allows and remotely accessible on the internet.
G Collect data 4/1/2017 3/31/2018 Concluded Suzanne Frye (Inactive) 6/29/2018 3:11:24 PM
Description: Dissolved oxygen and temperature data will be collected at one hour intervals from remote stations over the deepest portion of North and South Twin Lake. Additional dissolved oxygen/temperature profiles will be collected in each lake on a monthly basis year-round for QA/QC. Remote data will be collected with a minimum of four optical sensors leading to a data logger will be placed in each lake. Oxygen depletion rates measured at four different depths throughout the winter in both lakes will by used to estimate oxygen depletion rates and predict the oxygen required in the hypolimnion of both lakes for the following summer.
H Install and test remote winter monitoring stations 9/5/2017 12/16/2017 Concluded Suzanne Frye (Inactive) 6/29/2018 3:11:24 PM
Description: Oxygen levels will be monitored during the winter months as they were in summer months but data will not be remotely accessible. A remote monitoring station will be installed at the deepest locations and tested in North Twin Lake and South Twin Lake. The remote stations monitor dissolved oxygen and temperature values at several depth above the bottom of the lake including 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 meters above the bottom. Data loggers will be recovered in the spring when data will be downloaded.
