H: 176 - Summer steelhead production BY17 (acclimate/release)
Description:
Beginning in late March 2018, a group of 100,000 BY17 juvenile summer steelhead will be acclimated at Pendleton. Another group of 50,000 juvenile summer steelhead will be acclimated at Thornhollow beginning in early April. The fish at Pendleton will be held for approximately four weeks then forced out in late April. The fish at Thornhollow will be acclimated for approximately 10 days then forced out. ODFW will sample the fish for lengths and weights the day of releases. Factors such as transport schedule and river and weather conditions will affect the actual release schedule.

Description: Prior to transfer of 100,000 juveniles at Pendleton in late March, the facility will be prepared for acclimating and releasing fish. This includes: cleaning the ponds, securing the predator netting, outlet screens and jump screens installed and secured, opening the inlet valves to the ponds, starting the primary pumps and begin filling the ponds with water, crowders, dip nets, buckets, etc. will be set up and ready to use, testing the backup pumps, emergency generator, and alarm systems for automatic operation. The fish will be transported by ODFW and unloaded into the ponds. They will be acclimated for approximately 3-4 weeks at Pendleton and then forced out. The release size goal is 4.5 fish per pound. The fish will be fed twice daily during acclimation. Flows, temperatures, and dissolved oxygen measurements will be taken and recorded daily during acclimation. Mortalities will be removed and counted daily during acclimation and ODFW fish health personnel will be available to address specific disease concerns.

On the final day of holding, all dam boards will be pulled, the ponds will be lowered, and the fish will be crowded and forced out of the ponds. A minimum of 100 fish will be randomly removed from each pond and placed into live pens for length and weight sampling. ODFW will sample the fish the day of release. Factors such as transport schedule and river and weather conditions will affect the actual release schedule. Release size goal is 4.5 fish per pound.
