Title:
M: 186 - Repair bridge at Thirtymile Creek (BIA Rd 1045)
Description:
In 2016, under this project, the CCT replaced a culvert in Thirtymile Creek (BIA Road 1045) that prohibited Redband Trout from accessing approximately 9.3 km (5.8 mi) of spawning and rearing habitat. The culvert was replaced with a 10.67 m x 4.57 m (35 ft x 15 ft) concrete precast bridge. Bridge installation was completed on August 31, 2016.

Despite a major flood event [possibly 200 year (2% probability)] in the spring of 2017, the Thirtymile bridge appears to have remained undamaged; however, it has not been inspected by an engineer. The footings of this bridge are of the same design as those used for the Strawberry and North Nanamkin bridges that were damaged (see WEs J and K), which give us cause for concern. In 2017, the CCT will hire a contract engineer to inspect and if necessary develop a design plan for repairs or modifications to the Thirtymile bridge that may prevent damage similar to the Strawberry and North Nanamkin bridges. This WE is a placeholder that assumes a repair/modification is necessary.

The existing bridge will be lifted and footings will be extended and then the bridge will be reset in place. Scour protection features will be installed to protect the bridge footings. The repaired structure will be able to accommodate the yearly stream flow fluctuations, including a 500 year flood event. The repairs will be implemented by a qualified contractor following the design plans and under the direction of the subcontracted engineer and project biologists.
WE Agreement Type:
Contracted
Deliverable Specification:
In order to provide migratory redband trout access to approximately 9.3 km (5.8 mi) of spawning and rearing habitat in Thirtymile Creek, the CCT in coordination with subcontractors, will repair a damaged/at risk bridge. The repaired/modified bridge will allow for complete fish passage and will have adequate scour protection for the size of the stream.
