Title:
G: 158 - Operculum Punch or Tag Steelhead Passed Upstream for Trap Efficiency Mark-Recapture Estimate
Description:
Adult steelhead passed above the trap would be marked (e.g. operculum punch, floy tag or both) to allow for mark-recapture of adults moving back downstream after spawning, or for carcasses found during redd surveys. We will not be installing downstream V's at these weirs, because some of these streams are not large enough to accommodate another trap and we will be able to dip net and/or use a seine to collect downstream fish. Mark-recapture estimates would be used in calculating trap efficiency and overall escapement.

A EC Environmental compliance requirements complete 12/1/2019 11/30/2020 Concluded Russell Scranton 9/30/2019 3:16:17 PM
Description: On-the-ground work associated with this work element cannot proceed until this milestone is complete. Milestone is complete when final documentation is received from BPA environmental compliance staff.
B OrderTags Order PIT tags in TDI system 12/1/2019 10/31/2020 Concluded Russell Scranton 9/30/2019 3:16:17 PM
Description: Submit tag request in the Tag Distribution and Inventory application (TDI) at http://www.ptagis.org/services/tag-distribution-inventory indicating when the tags are needed (one or multiple shipments). Tag orders should be placed during September and October for shipment any time during the fiscal year. Funding for the tags occurs at the project level.
C Operculum punch or tag steelhead at trap 12/1/2019 6/15/2020 Concluded Russell Scranton 9/30/2019 3:16:17 PM
Description: The operculum mark or floy tag is to identify that we observed this fish and passed it upstream. The mark rate for recaptured fish will be used to expand the trap estimate to estimate the total population.
D Note marks or tag of downstream kelts or carcasses during redd surveys 12/1/2019 6/15/2020 Concluded Russell Scranton 9/30/2019 3:16:17 PM
Description: All kelts returning to the trap will be checked for marks to indicate whether they were sampled moving upstream at the trap. During spawning surveys we will check any carcasses for marks to assist with our mark recapture estimates. We will be looking at both the external and internal surface of the operculum, while the external surface can re grow the internal surface tends to show the mark for long periods of time. Operculum punches have been used successfully in other trapping projects on the Tucannon River and Asotin Creek and are also used for marking adults at Lyons Ferry Hatchery.
