Title:
F: 162 - Statistical summary and analysis of Umatilla River natural summer steelhead smolt trapping data
Description:
Provide statistical summaries and analysis to determine status and trends through 27 years of life history, smolt production, life-stage specific survival, and freshwater productivity data for Middle Columbia River DPS Umatilla River steelhead MPG. Fish and Wildlife Program RM&E strategies supported by this work element include assessment of the status and trend of juvenile abundance and productivity of natural origin fish populations and diversity of natural and hatchery origin fish populations. The status and trend data is also used to facilitate assessment of the Umatilla Basin Fisheries Restoration Program and support of tracking of steelhead recovery.
WE Agreement Type:
Contracted
Deliverable Specification:
Annual values and metrics summarized and analyzed within long term data sets to determine status and trends of the Middle Columbia River DPS Umatilla River steelhead MPG. Key values and metrics include size at emigration, median and cumulative emigration timing, smolt production, smolt survival, egg-to-smolt survival, smolt-to-adult return, and smolts produced per spawning adult.

A PUBPROTOCOL Review, revise, and publish Study Plan and Methods in monitoringmethods.org 11/18/2020 6/30/2021 Concluded Matthew Schwartz 4/25/2022 10:52:41 AM
Description: The Study Plan (including temporal and spatial design) and Methods for this work element are stored at monitoringresources.org and need to be finalized (i.e., "Published" through monitoringresources.org), preferably prior to data collection. Preparations for contract renewals must include reviewing any previously published Study Plan/Methods to ensure that they are consistent with how work will be done in any subsequent contract.
B Smolt size and conditon factor 7/1/2021 10/31/2021 Concluded Matthew Schwartz 4/25/2022 10:52:41 AM
Description: Assess variability in size and condition factor of natural summer steelhead and monitor trends through time.
C Smolt migration timing 7/1/2021 10/31/2021 Concluded Matthew Schwartz 4/25/2022 10:52:41 AM
Description: Assess timing variability of natural summer steelhead and monitor trends through time.
D Estimate smolt abundance 7/1/2021 10/31/2021 Concluded Matthew Schwartz 4/25/2022 10:52:41 AM
Description: Use mark-recapture data and catch data from downstream migrant traps to estimate the abundance of natural summer steelhead smolts in Birch Creek and at Three Mile Falls Dam and monitor trends through time.
E Estimate smolt survival 7/1/2021 10/31/2021 Concluded Matthew Schwartz 4/25/2022 10:52:41 AM
Description: Use PIT tag release and recapture data to estimate the survival of natural summer steelhead smolts to Three Mile Falls Dam and John Day Dam and monitor trends through time.
F Acquire spawner disposition data 7/1/2021 10/31/2021 Concluded Matthew Schwartz 4/25/2022 10:52:41 AM
Description: Obtain Umatilla River adult fish return disposition data collected by ODFW and CTUIR and populated by the Hatchery M&E project to enable calculation of egg-to-smolt survival, smolt-yield-per-spawner, and smolt-to-adult return for natural summer steelhead.
G Estimate egg-to-smolt survival 7/1/2021 10/31/2021 Concluded Matthew Schwartz 4/25/2022 10:52:41 AM
Description: Calculate brood-year specific egg-to-smolt survival for naturally-produced steelhead using spawner disposition data, broodstock fecundity data, and smolt abundance estimates. Monitor trends through time.
H Estimate smolt-yield-per-spawner 7/1/2021 10/31/2021 Concluded Matthew Schwartz 4/25/2022 10:52:41 AM
Description: Calculate brood-year specific smolt-yield-per-spawner for naturally-produced steelhead using spawner disposition data and smolt abundance estimates. Monitor trends through time.
I Estimate smolt-to-adult returns 7/1/2021 10/31/2021 Concluded Matthew Schwartz 4/25/2022 10:52:41 AM
Description: Smolt-to-adult returns (SAR) will be estimated for naturally-produced steelhead using spawner disposition data and smolt abundance estimates. SARs will also be calculated by obtaining detections of returning PIT tagged adults at Columbia River Dams and Three Mile Falls Dam. The ratio of smolts tagged to returning adults is the SAR. Monitor trends through time.
