Title:
H: 47 - Plant native vegetation on Muddy Springs Creek near in the area of the new habitat complexity project.
Description:
A planting plan has been developed for the Phase I habitat complexity project. Plantings in summer are often not successful so this planting will take place in fall or early spring. The goal is to capitalize on areas of the habitat work that will improve available water to the new vegetation. This will also require protection from wildlife with fence identified in WE I. This WE will complete Phase 1 of the willow planting from the 2022 Feb/March. The remaining planting will occur during the in-stream work window identified in permits that are currently in place. Phase I installed in February/March included harvested willow clumps planted as a part of the prior contract's WE for Increase Aquatic and/or Floodplain Complexity. This Work Element (Plant Vegetation) will introduce native vegetation to the riparian area in small pockets that can be protected by wildlife fence due to the number of elk that inhabit the area during the winter.

A planting plan, attached in the documents, was developed for Phase I of the Muddy Springs project. Due to delays in design and permits only the construction of the habitat complexity was able to take place in the 2021/2022 contract. By utilizing this plan we will evaluate the best location for small plots of planting and the best time to plant based on weather and available water to complete these plantings.

Willow plantings may need to be subsidized from the original planting during the Feb/March time frame and would need to be completed under the 404 permit in July and August of 2022. Other plantings may be more successful in September/October of 2022 or early spring 2023. The Environmental consultation and permits including cultural survey work should be completed under EC completed for Phase I.
