Title:
L: 157 - Deepwater redd surveys
Description:
We will conduct underwater surveys for deepwater fall Chinook salmon redds in the Snake River upstream of Lower Granite Reservoir in cooperation with the Idaho Power Company and the Nez Perce Tribe to provide a source of in-season data as well as data for evaluating the spatial distribution criteria under the Snake River Fall Chinook recovery plan. Deepwater redd surveys will continue to be conducted cooperatively with USGS and IPC as in the past. 25 known spawning sites will be surveyed by searching established transects with an underwater video camera. Each site will be surveyed once near, and following, the peak of spawning (mid to late November).

8 Milestones
Sort Type Title Start End Status Modified By Modified Date
A EC Environmental compliance requirements complete 4/1/2023 4/15/2023 Concluded Jonathan McCloud 11/29/2022 8:40:40 AM
Description: On-the-ground work associated with this work element cannot proceed until this milestone is complete. Milestone is complete when final documentation is received from BPA environmental compliance staff.
B PUBPROTOCOL Review, revise, and finalize study plan sample design protocol and methods in MonitoringResouces.org 4/1/2023 4/15/2023 Concluded Jonathan McCloud 11/29/2022 8:40:40 AM
Description: The Study Plan's Sample Design, Protocol and Methods for this work element are stored at MonitoringResources.org and need to be completed (i.e., "Finalized" through MonitoringResources.org), preferably prior to data collection. Preparations for contract renewals must include reviewing any previously finalized Sample Designs, Protocols & Methods to ensure that they are consistent with how work will be done in any subsequent contract.
C Suggested Implement Study Plan 4/1/2023 3/31/2024 Concluded Jonathan McCloud 11/29/2022 8:40:40 AM
Description: Implement the study plan's protocols and sample design consistent with the WE description and methods in the SOW. The start date of this milestone is used to set the completion date for the EC milestone.
D BackUp Secure data back-up 4/1/2023 3/31/2024 Concluded Jonathan McCloud 5/17/2022 7:46:40 AM
Description: Minimum requirements: Hard copies of field sheets and original dataloggers secured against fire and flood. At least daily data back-up of electronic data on a separate hard drive. Secure cloud-based or off-site location data back-up to preclude catastrophic data loss at least weekly. More frequent cloud/off-site back-up is greatly encouraged. [Timing guidance: from beginning to end of contract]
E Upload Yearly upload of error-checked datasets 4/1/2023 3/31/2024 Concluded Jonathan McCloud 5/17/2022 7:46:40 AM
Description: Upload datasets with associated metadata to a publicly accessible site each year as soon as they have been QA/QC checked. This generally happens within 6 months for direct field-to-database input, but may be longer if laboratory analysis is required (e.g., scale reading or genetic analyses). If data is not QA/QCed within 1 year, data must be made accessible with acknowledgement of QA/QC limitations. Periods for dataset collection should be no longer than a year, and coincide with the logical biology of the data collection, which may not be on a calendar year. Example of a dataset: redd counts for one species for one season for a particular brood year. Dataset upload requirements apply to both original and derived data, which should be at a level of quality suitable for release to resource co-managers to make decisions – not the rigor required as if you were going to use the data for a peer-reviewed publication.
F VALLOC NOT required at this time - Validate Locations in Sample Design 4/1/2023 3/31/2024 Canceled Jonathan McCloud 5/17/2022 7:46:40 AM
Description: NOT required at this time - Upon completion of field or lab work, go to the sample design in monitoringresources.org and validate the actual locations sampled for the field season or lab assessment for the contract period.
G Locate and count deepwater redds with submersible camera 10/20/2023 12/7/2023 Concluded Jonathan McCloud 11/29/2022 8:40:40 AM
Description: Conduct underwater searches 5 days per week from the third week in November through the first week in December by passing a camera over the river bottom in parallel paths spaced roughly 30 ft. apart. Determine the distance between paths by a GPS. Adjust the distance between the camera and river bottom, and the angle of the camera, to maximize the amount of viewable area without losing the ability to observe details of the bottom substrates. Reduce the distance between passes and conduct multiple searches in areas where redds are located. Record redd locations using GPS. In areas where redds overlap and cannot be identified individually, survey the perimeter of the redd group (or patch) and estimate the number of redds in the group. Approximately 25 deepwater sites will be searched during this time period.
