Title:
J: 29 - Increase habitat complexity in Muddy Springs by implementing Phase II by installing woody structures and creating pools to provide habitat and cover for juvenile fish.
Description:
Muddy Springs Habitat Improvement Project Phase II will enhance habitat on 0.80 river miles in the Pahsimeroi River watershed. Muddy Springs Creek is a spring creek that connects to the Pahsimeroi River. Muddy Springs Creek flows into the Pahsimeroi in the heart of Chinook Salmon spawning habitat and is ideal summer and winter rearing habitat for juvenile fish and may also create thermal refuge in the summer and winter as it maintains a steady water temperature and does not freeze. Much of the channel had been de-watered for over 50 years. Due to this de-watering it lacks riparian vegetation and in-stream complexity. This project will improve habitat forms and processes for juvenile spring Chinook salmon and summer steelhead. Juvenile salmonid habitat enhancement will be accomplished through narrowing the channel width by placement large woody debris, channel spanning logs and BDA’s along with extensive riparian planting. Intended flooding in some areas will help reduced sediment in both Muddy Springs and the Pahsimeroi. Similar to Phase I, Channel spanning wood structures in varying configurations will be installed throughout the reach. Pond structures and several island structures are also proposed in this design. The purpose of these structures is to provide habitat and cover for juvenile fish, increase instream complexity, narrow the channel, and increase water surface elevations to reconnect the adjacent floodplain. These structures will be constructed with a combination of whole trees, rootwads, racking and slash, willow clumps, willow cuttings, and untreated posts. Most structures will be channel spanning. Approximately 6 pools will be installed with this project.
