Title:
F: 29 - Little Wind River, Phase V, Habitat Enhancement Project Implementation
Description:
Aquatic and floodplain complexity will be enhanced through the addition of approximately 30 unanchored logs, providing large woody debris in the stream as well as approximately 20 scour pools as a result. This work spans over 7 individual work sites, comprising approximately 0.35 miles of enhanced stream habitat, along a 1.45 mile reach of Little Wind River.

This project reach along the Little Wind River, moving upstream of previous phases, is about 1.45 miles in length, and is difficult to access with machinery due to steep valley slopes. There are several trees perched along the reach that can be activated and dropped into the stream. This and other directional felling of large wood can be done with a hand crew using mechanical and gas-powered tools (e.g. chainsaw). We plan to hire the Mt. Adams Resource Stewards crew, a local non-profit who already has this capability.

UCD is in process of ensuring environmental compliance is complete. In coordination with USFS-Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, this project is being reviewed under the ARBO programmatic and will go to implementation in summer/fall 2024.

Little Wind River hosts steelhead and Coho (due to being the only major tributary downstream of Shipherd Falls). In the habitat assessment performed as part of the 2017 LCFRB Wind River Habitat Strategy, the reach that encompasses the project area was rated as either fair or poor for Pools, Large Wood, Off-Channel Habitat, and Fine Sediment. This project will address all of these limiting factors. By activating large wood instream, habitat complexity will increase, sediment and spawning gravels can be retained, pools will scour, and off-channel or side-channel habitat will be activated.

The phase 5 project reach encompasses three priority project reaches identified in the Habitat Strategy (LCFRB), Pipeline (L1), Berge Confluence (L2) and Dillon (L3) Projects. These projects were ranked #1 and #6 in the High Priority category, and moving upstream, #14 in the High/Medium category (page 28 of the Strategy report).
