Title:
M: 157 - Juvenile Sturgeon Index Sampling (BC MFLNRO)
Description:
Monitor and evaluate survival, condition, growth, movement, and habitat use of hatchery reared juvenile white sturgeon released into the Kootenai River. (Recovery measure 3.31) (BiOp RPA 4b). Monitor and evaluate biological condition and related population dynamics of white sturgeon in the Kootenai River. (Recovery measure 2.26 and 3.31.314). This sampling program for juvenile white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) in the Kootenay/Kootenai River between the Kootenay River delta at the south end of Kootenay Lake and Bonners Ferry Idaho is intended to establish long-term juvenile white sturgeon sampling locations and methods that are consistent between years and among all sampling agencies. Other sampling includes the monitoring of larval sturgeon releases and adult sturgeon in the Kootenai River and Kootenay Lake. All data generated by the Tribal Hatchery program and by the M&E component of the program is contributed to a cooperative database managed by IDFG.

Sort Type Title Start End Status Modified By Modified Date
A EC Environmental compliance requirements complete 2/1/2014 2/1/2014 Concluded Virgil Watts III 12/12/2013 5:09:14 PM
Description: On-the-ground work associated with this work element cannot proceed until this milestone is complete. Milestone is complete when final documentation is received from BPA environmental compliance staff (completion can be based on pre-existing environmental documentation from BPA).
B PUBPROTOCOL Review, revise, and Publish protocol, study design, and methods in monitoringmethods.org 2/1/2014 1/31/2015 Concluded Dan Warren (Inactive) 12/4/2013 11:03:01 AM
Description: The Protocol (including temporal and spatial design) and Methods for this work element are stored at monitoringmethods.org and need to be finalized (i.e., "Published" through monitoringmethods.org), preferably prior to data collection. Preparations for contract renewals must include reviewing any previously published Protocols/Methods to ensure that they are consistent with how work will be done in any subsequent contract.
C Monitor larval sturgeon releases 6/16/2014 7/3/2014 Concluded Dan Warren (Inactive) 12/4/2013 11:25:06 AM
Description: Assist IDFG in monitoring of larval sturgeon releases and natural recruitment in the Kootenai River during 2013 when requested.
D Conduct juvenile sturgeon sampling 2/1/2014 12/31/2014 Concluded Sue Ireland 12/5/2013 3:49:59 PM
Description: Conduct sampling for juvenile sturgeon in the Kootenay River in Canada and in Kootenay Lake during June-September 2014, using a combination of 2, 4 and 6 inch mesh gill nets, as agreed during pre-sampling meetings with the KTOI. Maintain detailed records of all sampling locations, effort and catches, including depth, GPS-based locations, PIT tag numbers, scute marks, weights and lengths.
E Mark juvenile white sturgeon with PIT tag and/or scute removal before release 2/1/2014 1/31/2015 Concluded Dan Warren (Inactive) 12/4/2013 11:26:31 AM
Description: Conduct angling or set line sampling for adult sturgeon in Kootenay River and Lake in spring and fall to improve population estimates and provide mature fish for sonic tagging efforts to be coordinated by IDFG and KTOI. Maintain detailed records of all sampling locations, effort and catches, including depth, GPS-based locations, PIT tag numbers, scute marks, weights and lengths. For any newly captured wild juvenile sturgeon, mark with a PIT tag, remove the second left lateral scute, and obtain a fin ray section as well as DNA and WSIV samples. Maintain traps, gill nets and other equipment over the winter in preparation for the above-noted work. Provide a boat, crew and sampling equipment to assist in capture of adult sturgeon for hatchery or tagging studies in Idaho.
F Maintain and/or aquire traps, gill nets and other equipment 2/1/2014 1/31/2015 Concluded Dan Warren (Inactive) 12/4/2013 11:26:59 AM
Description: Compile nets and other equipment over the winter in preparation for all sampling work and data collection.
G Provide data and input for survival rate analysis of juvenile capture data 5/1/2014 11/14/2014 Concluded Sue Ireland 12/5/2013 3:49:59 PM
Description: Provide data and input into survival rate analysis of juvenile and adult capture data. Evaluate age and size-specific condition (K, relative weight, Wr) of white sturgeon cohorts released into the Kootenai River, and the wild component of the population. This portion of the task will be implemented by using data collected through the existing monitoring program. Use simple sturgeon population model with actual demographic information to project the trajectory and equilibrium hatchery and wild population numbers and biomass. Project effects of different stocking levels and family spawning strategies on future number, biomass, and parentage to be used as the basis for evaluating alternative hatchery strategies. Explore effects of different carrying capacity and food availability assumptions.
H DELIV Kootenay Sturgeon Monitoring and Evaluation 1/31/2015 Concluded Sue Ireland 12/5/2013 3:51:12 PM
