Title:
E: 156 - Kootenai River Sediment and Bedform Movement
Description:
Monitor sediment transport and bedforms in sturgeon spawning habitat.

Improve the characterization of riverbed stability and bedform movement in the white sturgeon spawning reach. Develop capability to continuously monitor suspended-sediment input into the Kootenai River white sturgeon spawning reach. Describe availability and movement of fluvial sediment through white sturgeon spawning habitat and identify where habitat substrate is currently aggrading, degrading, and stable. Video the riverbed at select spawning sites. Images of the river bottom will provide biologists a glimpse of the white sturgeon spawning habitat and provide some additional information for the design phase for spawning habitat enhancements.

This work element will be performed by USGS.

Improve the characterization of riverbed stability and bedform movement in the white sturgeon spawning reach. Use previously collected data and any new data to improve the characterization of stability of the Kootenai riverbed and the height and wavelength of the dune bedform along the river bottom. New data could include the monitoring of a pilot substrate enhancement structure project at Shorty's Island for the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. This characterization of stability of the Kootenai riverbed and height and wavelength of the dune bedform along the river bottom is critical for calibrating the multidimensional model and is critical information for the design phase of habitat enhancement. The enhanced substrate needs to be engineered so it will be exposed and not buried with sand during the spawning season.

Describe availability and movement of fluvial sediment through white sturgeon spawning habitat and identify where habitat substrate is currently aggrading, degrading, and stable.

Develop capability to continuously monitor suspended-sediment input into the Kootenai River white sturgeon spawning reach - Upgrade the capabilities of the USGS Kootenai Tribal Hatchery gage so that near real-time suspended-sediment concentrations can be computed using backscatter intensity measurements made with the acoustic Doppler velocity meter installed at the gage. Acoustic backscatter would serve as a surrogate for sediment concentration and by using the streamflow measured at the gage then the sediment loads could be calculated. About eight to ten suspended-sediment samples will be collected during four sampling trips that are combined with ADCP measurements to monitor riverbed stability and the height and wavelength of dunes. Suspended-sediment samples will be collected using the depth-integrated equal-distance-interval method and a D-96 sampler (Edwards and Glysson,1999). All suspended-sediment samples will be sent to the USGS-Cascade Volcanic Observatory sediment lab for concentration analysis (Guy, 1969; U.S. Geological survey, 2001). These data will be used for fine tuning suspended-sediment transport modeling in the WSSH because the more known about the sediment load entering the WSSH, the more accurate the model can be calibrated to simulate sediment transport in the Kootenai River.

Video the riverbed at select spawning sites. Images of the river bottom will provide biologists a glimpse of the white sturgeon spawning habitat and provide some additional information for the design phase for spawning habitat enhancements.

B Monitor riverbed stability and bedforms in spawning reach 10/30/2005 8/30/2006 Concluded Virgil Watts III 6/1/2006 8:12:51 AM
Description: Monitor sediment transport and bedforms in sturgeon spawning habitat: Improve the characterization of riverbed stability and bedform movement in the white sturgeon spawning reach. Characterization of the spatial pattern of erosion and deposition and bedform geometry in the white sturgeon spawning reach is critical for calibrating the multidimensional model and is critical information for the design phase of habitat enhancement. The enhanced substrate needs to be engineered so it will be exposed and not buried with sand during the spawning season. This is a continuation of work aimed at evaluating the spatial pattern of erosion and deposition and bedform characteristics in the Kootenai River WSSH over a range of flows: monitor riverbed stability and dune height and dune wave length. Monitoring will be conducted using an ADCP equipped with a mapping grade GPS with a horizontal positioning accuracy of less than 1-meter and navigational software.
C Incorporate bedform characteristics into model 7/1/2006 9/30/2006 Concluded Virgil Watts III 6/1/2006 8:12:51 AM
Description: Incorporation of bedform characteristics data into the hydraluic/sediment transport model to improve the calibration of the model to provide basic data for the design of Phase II and III spawning habitat enhancements.
D Develop capability to continuously monitor sediment input 10/30/2005 10/15/2006 Concluded Virgil Watts III 6/1/2006 8:12:51 AM

E Video Kootenai River spawning habitat 2/1/2006 8/15/2006 Concluded Virgil Watts III 6/1/2006 8:12:51 AM
Description: Video parts of river bottom at spawning sites - images of the river bottom will provide fisheries biologist a glimpse of the spawning habitat and provide some additional information for the design phase for spawning habitat enhancements. The USGS will use this information to obtain a better insight into the sediments that form the substrate along with the bedforms and then make any necessary refinements to the multidimensional models. Parts of river bottom that are under consideration for spawning habitat enhancement will be video taped. Imaging will focus on identifying areas with sand bedforms and where the lacustrine clay-silt layer is exposed along the bottom or sides of the channel.
