C | 96527 | 157 | Collect/Generate/Validate Field and Lab Data | Nektonic Species sampling - Plume and coastal Oregon and Washington | Measure composition, distribution, and abundance of pelagic and nektonic species, including salmonids, in fall of 2011 and spring 2012 in the Columbia River plume and off coastal Oregon and Washington.
We will conduct three cruises (September 2011, May and June 2012) from Newport, Oregon, to northern Washington and 8 cruises just in the Columbia River plume (April-Aug 2012). This research will directly measure and quantify juvenile salmon abundance and distribution and provide samples to assess marine growth (both somatic and bioenergetic) and health (disease) as features that can be related to physical and biological processes in the Columbia River plume and associated ocean environment. Important marine bio/physical conditions that will be measured and compared with salmonid metrics include: 1) nutrient concentration and phytoplankton standing crop, 2) zooplankton community structure, 3) salmonid food habits and prey fields (zooplankton biomass and species composition), 4) forage fish community and 5) salmonid predators, including large fishes, seabirds and marine mammals. | $107,089 | 15.03% | 09/01/2011 | 09/30/2012 |
D | 96528 | 162 | Analyze/Interpret Data | Assess the role of the plume on salmon growth and survival | Through analytical assessment of biological features of juvenile salmon in and out of the Columbia River plume, assess the role of unique features of the Columbia River plume that affect salmon growth and survival. | $87,769 | 12.32% | 09/01/2011 | 09/30/2012 |
E | 96529 | 161 | Disseminate Raw/Summary Data and Results | Present Results/Share Data | Results of our BPA-funded research that have relevance to climate change in the marine environment will be presented at the 2nd International Conference on the Effects of Climate Change on the World's Oceans, hosted by ICES and CIEM in May 2012. ICES, PICES and IOC joined forces in 2008 for the first global ocean symposium and it attracted 400 scientists from 48 countries. This second look at the "Effects of Climate Change on the World's Oceans" will go over many issues of the role of climate change on the oceans: sea level rise, changes in thermo-haline ocean circulation, acidification, oligotrophy of temperate seas, changes in species abundance, distribution and phenology, loss of biodiversity, all of which will have serious implications for marine living resources, etc, and are important to this research. This symposium aims to bring together experts from different disciplines to exchange observations, results, models and ideas at a global scale and to discuss the opportunities to mitigate and protect the marine environment and its living resources. | $1,000 | 0.14% | | 05/31/2012 |
