  • If you have overarching, general habitat management goals and removing vegetation is one part of an overall scheme of activities, you can identify planting area/s and Study Design as part of your 174. Produce Plan. The year you actually plan to remove vegetation on-the-ground, use WE# 53, Remove Vegetation and detail your steps as milestones.
  • You are using a controlled burn to remove competing vegetation; controlled burn becomes a milestone or the "tool" under this WE# 53, Remove Vegetation. (Exception: If your controlled burn goal is to maintain or improve existing habitat condition, it becomes a milestone under 22. Maintain Vegetation (Expired).) If you're both removing and maintaining, use 53. Remove Vegetation (Expired). Call or e-mail your COTR or the WE owner for more clarification if you need help.
  • Use WE# 53, Remove Vegetation if you are using an alternative agricultural practice such as tilling, mowing, etc with the primary intent to eliminate or reduce noxious weeds and/or competing vegetation. (Exception: If this practice is used to maintain existing vegetation, use 22. Maintain Vegetation (Expired) and again identify the method as a milestone (or in the title).) The "method" becomes a milestone, and is also identified in the WE description and deliverable.
  • If your goal remains to reduce or eliminate vegetation on a specific site, then use the remove vegetation work element year after year if necessary. When the offending vegetation is reduced to the point that the focus shifts to enhancing the existing vegetation, then begin using 22. Maintain Vegetation (Expired) or 47. Plant Vegetation.

Deliverable Status:
Required
Default Deliverable Desc:
Acres of removed vegetation
Potential Deliverables:
  • Number of acres treated

  • Rule 1 (Environmental Compliance): Any associated ESA, cultural resources, NEPA, permitting, or other environmental compliance work should be split out under 165. Produce Environmental Compliance Documentation.

    Example:

WE: 165. Produce Environmental Compliance Documentation
WE Title: Environmental compliance for all contract activities

WE: 165. Produce Environmental Compliance Documentation
WE Title: Environmental compliance for all contract activities
    WE Milestones:

Milestone Title: EC for Chinese Tallow tree removal along Ruby Creek
Milestone Description: Provide BPA Environmental Compliance Lead with verification of any required local permits, a detailed map, and project description to support cultural resources consultation; or verification that a cultural resources survey has been done on the site and it is approved for ground disturbing activities associated with removing vegetation.

Note: Every instance of 53. Remove Vegetation (Expired), Remove Vegetation will have as the first milestone "Environmental compliance requirements complete," and the end date of this milestone must be before the start date of any ground disturbing activities. Therefore, your SOW will have one Environmental Compliance WE as well as one environmental compliance milestone embedded within each of the Remove Vegetation WEs.

  • Rule 2 : If you are removing plants at various locations, a work element must be created for each location to document metric requirements. This does not require multiple work elements for 165. Produce Environmental Compliance Documentation.

To identify the location point, choose the approximate center of the area planted. If a location already exists in Pisces, click the "Link" button to synchronize locations. If not, enter a location and location description for this work element to enable future linking.

    Option 1 (Sample descriptive titles):

    WE: 53. Remove Vegetation (Expired)
WE Title: Thin 20 acres of Ponderosa Pine on the Miller Tract

    WE: 53. Remove Vegetation (Expired)
WE Title: Treat 45 acres of sulfur cinquefoil with glyphosate

    WE: 53. Remove Vegetation (Expired)
WE Title: Cut 5 acres of Russian olive and treat stumps

    WE: 53. Remove Vegetation (Expired)
WE Title: Spray re-sprouting blackberry on 30 acres

    WE: 53. Remove Vegetation (Expired)
WE Title: Control 50 acres cheatgrass in West Upland Weed Unit

    WE: 53. Remove Vegetation (Expired)
WE Title: Restore grassland - remove 10 acres encroaching juniper in South Pasture

    WE: 53. Remove Vegetation (Expired)
WE Title: Establish forage openings for wildlife on Anderson Acquisition

    WE: 53. Remove Vegetation (Expired)
WE Title: Spray 5 acres of knapweeds, thistle, and skeleton weed along Cooper Creek

  • Rule 3 (Metrics): If there are multiple projects at a single location, vegetation removal being one of them, then be sure to split out each separate work element so we can capture the appropriate metrics. For example, you're spraying vegetation, but you want the cattle out of the area too. You'll be building fence, planting more shrubs and maintaining shrubs planted last year:

    Example:

    WE: 53. Remove Vegetation (Expired)
WE Title: Spring spaying - 5 acres of knapweeds, thistle and skeleton weed along Cooper Creek

    WE: 40. Install Fence
WE Title: Create 3 miles of riparian buffer along Cooper Creek

    WE: 47. Plant Vegetation
WE Title: 8 acres hawthorn/snowberry/dogwood along Cooper Creek riparian buffer

    WE: 22. Maintain Vegetation (Expired)
WE Title: Determine health of 850 riparian shrubs planted in 2004 along Cooper Creek
