Associated Work Elements

The purchase of PIT tags is performed by BPA in conjunction with Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission (PSMFC). Tags are requested through PSMFC in the Tag Distribution and Inventory (TDI) application . Once requested, it is necessary to obtain approval from BPA prior to shipment authorization. Install Fish Monitoring Equipment is used to describe installation of a weir, trap, electronic portal, or other equipment or facility used to monitor fish passage or to collect juvenile or adult fish. However, if the effort/cost to install is small, this work could simply be a milestone under 157. Collect/Generate/Validate Field and Lab Data.

Rules and Examples

Rule 1 (Metrics): The purchase of PIT tags is always identified separately from the work associated with implanting the tags in fish or wildlife (see 158. Mark/Tag Animals) or work associated with acquiring, evaluating, or analyzing data obtained from PIT tag readers (see 70. Install Fish Monitoring Equipment, 157. Collect/Generate/Validate Field and Lab Data, 159. Transfer/Consolidate Regionally Standardized Data, 160. Create/Manage/Maintain Database, 162. Analyze/Interpret Data).

Rule 2 (Focal Species, Location of Work): If PIT tags are being purchased for multiple species or for multiple locations, it is permitted to use a single PIT Tags work element to capture the cost. However, it is not always permitted to lump the related work elements (e.g., most work elements in the Hatchery Operations and Maintenance category require splitting by focal species).

PIT tag pre-approval

Required

The BPA project manager must pre-approve the shipment of PIT tags. The BPA project manager should contact BPA's PIT tag coordinator, to initiate the pre-approval process. BPA's PIT tag coordinator will use the project budget tool in CBFish to ensure that adequate money has been allocated for the PIT tag purchase.

Shipment of PIT tags to contractor(s)

Each year the contractor is required to submit a PIT tag forecast in the Tag Distribution Inventory (TDI) (within http://www.ptagis.org) to PSMFC.

Submit tag request in TDS to PSMFC indicating when the tags are needed (one or multiple shipments)
