| B | 180 | Enhance Floodplain/Remove, Modify, Breach Dike | Collette Mine Stream Restoration (Phase I) Floodplain Enhancement | This project will restore the stream and riparian conditions in Lolo Creek in the area of the now inactive Collette mine. An approximately 1,300 foot section of Lolo Creek located 2.5 miles upstream from its junction with Musselshell Creek was re-routed as a result of a past mining claim. Impacted stream conditions in this reach include eroding banks, lack of sinuosity, and lack of instream complexity. Additionally, approximately 1.7 acres of settling ponds and dikes have been constructed as part of the mining process. This project will restore natural conditions in Lolo Creek by returning the stream channel to its original location in order to improve habitat for all aquatic species and life stages of native fish populations and reduce downstream sediment.
This work element represents the restoration of the floodplain function, by improving floodplain connection of Lolo Creek, throughout the Collette Mine (Phase I) Project area.
The Nez Perce Tribe (NPT) and the Nez Perce - Clearwater National Forests (NPCNFs) will work as partners to implement this project. The NPT will subcontract with the NPCNFs through our partnership agreement to administer the construction contract. The NPCNFs is the lead agency and will complete all necessary environmental compliance for all aspects of this project including NEPA, ESA, and cultural resources requirements. The Nez Perce Tribe will assist with the selection of a contractor and inspection of the p | Chinook (O. tshawytscha) - Snake River Spring/Summer (not listed), Steelhead (O. mykiss) - Snake River DPS (Threatened), Trout, Bull (S. confluentus) (Threatened) | Cutthroat Trout, Westslope (O. c. lewisi), Lamprey, Pacific (Entosphenus tridentata) |
| C | 29 | Increase Aquatic and/or Floodplain Complexity | Collette Mine Stream Restoration (Phase I) Instream Structures | This project will restore the stream and riparian conditions in Lolo Creek in the area of the now inactive Collette mine. An approximately 1,300 foot section of Lolo Creek located 2.5 miles upstream from its junction with Musselshell Creek was re-routed as a result of a past mining claim. This project will restore natural conditions in Lolo Creek by returning the stream channel to its original location in order to improve habitat for all aquatic species and life stages of native fish populations and reduce downstream sediment.
This work element represents the creation of instream structures (vegetated wood and brush fascine, and large wood structures) in Lolo Creek, throughout the Collette Mine (Phase I) Project area. New instream structures will provide channel stability, increased aquatic habitat complexity, stream bank stability, erosion control and reduced stream temperatures.
The large wood structures are designed to create complex hydraulics such as eddies and secondary flow circulations. Large wood provides in-stream cover and shade for temperature reduction, deep pools which improve hyporheic flow and residual pools with provide low velocity holding habitat and over wintering habitat.
The vegetated wood and brush fascine will creates a highly complex vegetated bank margin. The structure is built on a cobble and wood toe of the stream. The structures promotes rapid development of desired vegetated communities and promotes the rapid development of woody vegetation on the streambank. Woody vegetation on the streambank provides instream cover, shade for temperature reduction, wood debris recruitment over time, refuge during high flows, organic matter inputs and supports emerging aquatic insects.

| D | 47 | Plant Vegetation | Plant Riparian Vegetation | The Lolo Creek watershed has historically experienced significant grazing and road construction which has destroyed riparian areas. Re-vegetation efforts have been ongoing since 2000, and over 16,000 trees have been planted to date. Approximately 1,200 native riparian trees and shrubs will be planted in 2015. | Chinook (O. tshawytscha) - Snake River Fall ESU (Threatened), Chinook (O. tshawytscha) - Snake River Spring/Summer ESU (Threatened), Steelhead (O. mykiss) - Snake River DPS (Threatened) | Cutthroat Trout, Westslope (O. c. lewisi), Lamprey, Pacific (Entosphenus tridentata), Trout, Rainbow (Oncorhynchus mykiss) |
| E | 186 | Operate and Maintain Habitat/Passage/Structure | Maintain Fence | From 1998 to 2006 fence has been constructed of wooden posts and four-strand barbed or smooth wire. Due to heavy snow loads, annual maintenance is required to maintain a properly functioning fence that protects riparian and stream habitat.
Since the fence maintenance and construction crew is used by the entire watershed division, this project will be completed between the start and end dates, but the exact timing is dependent on other projects within the division. | Chinook (O. tshawytscha) - Snake River Spring/Summer (not listed), Steelhead (O. mykiss) - Snake River DPS (Threatened) | Cutthroat Trout, Coastal (Oncorhynchus clarkii clarkii) - All Anadromous Populations, Lamprey, Pacific (Entosphenus tridentata), Trout, Bull (S. confluentus) (Threatened) |
| F | 199 | Remove Vegetation | Treat Exotic Invasive Species | The USFS Environmental Assessment completed in 2004 identifies the Musselshell Meadows as a highly used, culturally sensitive area of particular concern to the Nez Perce Tribe. During the 2007 field season, NPT completed a non-native, invasive plant inventory in Musselshell Meadows which was utilized to develop a treatment plan for the highest priority areas of the 190 acre meadow area and surrounding areas. The focus will include corridors of invasion, such as roads, trails, and disturbed areas.
The Nez Perce Tribe will collaborate with the Nez Perce - Clearwater National Forests (NPCNFs) who will implement the invasive plant treatment. The Nez Perce Tribe will assist in inventory, planning, contractor selection, technical oversight, and the final inspection. No BPA funds will be used for the purchase or application of herbicides. | Chinook (O. tshawytscha) - Snake River Spring/Summer (not listed), Steelhead (O. mykiss) - Snake River DPS (Threatened) | Lamprey, Pacific (Entosphenus tridentata), Trout, Bull (S. confluentus) (Threatened) |
| G | 119 | Manage and Administer Projects | Management, Coordination, and Communication | Project management includes coordinating project activities, attending meetings and workshops, seeking additional funding, prioritizing and scheduling projects, employee supervision, preparing statements of work, managing budgets, and completing reports. Training will be competed as needed for key personnel to maintain best management practices.
NPT personnel will also participate in US Forest Service Level 1 coordination meetings, other watershed-wide resource planning efforts, and the review and assessment of resource project proposals in the watershed.
The Nez Perce Tribe, BPA, and the Nez Perce - Clearwater National Forests (NPCNFs) have been partners in watershed restoration since 1996, which includes sharing funds and resources to complete projects. Each year, project specifics are captured in an agreement that is signed by all parties. | | |
